Michigan is built around two priorities: restocking harvested red pine on state land, and rebuilding the conifer habitat that depends on it.
Michigan's state forests replant thousands of acres of red pine every year, as stands reach the end of a 70 to 90 year cycle. Red pine is a keystone conifer across roughly 1.6 million acres of the state and underpins the rural economies built around these forests. Seedlings go in across April and May at around 2,250 per hectare. Survival is tracked at cohort level through Veritree's monitoring platform, currently estimated at 90%.
Replanted stands rebuild the canopy that conifer-dependent species rely on. The Red Crossbill, Michigan's featured species, has a bill evolved specifically to prise seed out of red pine cones. Bioacoustic sensors, trail cameras and geospatial layers record what returns, alongside golden-winged warbler, magnolia warbler and turkey.
