Decades of crop intensification degraded the soil, accelerated biodiversity loss and left farmers exposed to climate shocks. Agroforestry rebuilds both — putting native canopy back into farms and back into protected forest blocks.
Nothing-but-peanut left sandy soils with no structure, no shade and no organic matter. Gum arabic, mango, cashew and mahogany go back in across the farm, holding ground through harmattan winds and short, violent rainy-season storms, and giving farmers something to harvest that isn't a single annual crop. Planting runs July to October. Survival is tracked through Veritree's platform, currently estimated at 75%.
Nearly 60% of Senegal's rural population depends on agriculture, and the peanut economy under-served the women inside it. Mother Trees runs tailored training, flexible schedules and larger farming plots for women, alongside community seed banks. That's why this site carries eight UN SDGs: no poverty, zero hunger, gender equality, decent work, reduced inequalities, climate, life on land and partnerships.
