Georgia is built around two priorities: replanting timberland after Helene, and holding the forestry economy that depends on it.
Hurricane Helene tore through Georgia's timberland in 2024. The Georgia Forestry Commission puts the loss at over $1 billion in timber alone. This project replants loblolly pine across damaged stands at around 1,000 trees per hectare, in a January to March window. Survival is tracked through Veritree's monitoring platform and currently estimated at 90%.
Georgia's forestry sector underpins rural economies across the south of the state, which is why hurricane, wildfire and pine beetle damage lands as an economic problem as much as an ecological one. This project sits within nearly half a million acres of working forest managed to Sustainable Forestry Initiative standards, where recovery and harvest run together. Bobcat, black bear and eastern river cooter are all native to the landscape.
