Lake Victoria's
watershed

Old Bonjoge is Kisumu's only nearby woodland and the watershed that drains into Lake Victoria. Restoring it is about the city's air and water, and the people living beside it.

Kisumu is Kenya's third largest city, and Old Bonjoge is the only woodland near it. 2,150 hectares, most of it cleared as the population grew. It also drains into Lake Victoria, a basin 45 million people depend on (World Bank, 2025) and one holding over 651 freshwater species (IUCN, 2018). Restoration runs through nurseries raising native seedlings, planted across two windows a year on the long and short rains. Survival is tracked through Veritree's platform, currently estimated at 75%.

Work, water and honey.

EarthLungs runs the site under Kenya Forest Service's Adopt a Forest framework, providing employment to forest-adjacent communities and setting up beehives for honey production through the Pollinate & Protect programme. Trail cameras and bioacoustic sensors track what comes back: olive baboon, vervet monkey and jackal have all been recorded here. That's recorded on site, not inferred from a regional species list.
