A holistic restoration strategy combining native species, forest regeneration, community livelihoods and long-term ecosystem stewardship.
A mix of 14 native species, selected to suit the local microclimate, is regenerating degraded land in Tanzania's Tanga region. The project sits within the coastal forests of Eastern Africa, one of the world's 36 biodiversity hotspots, with trees establishing well at an 82% survival rate.
Native species are being planted across agroforestry and mangrove sites, rebuilding the conditions local wildlife need to return. Canopy cover is up 18% and bird and small mammal sightings have risen 25% since work began.
Restoration that pays a community, not just a landscape. Over 1,832 people are employed across 1,266 households, the majority of them are women, earning from agroforestry crops between the trees.
